Great Walks of Australia has expanded its collection to 14 guided walks nationwide with the addition of the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa Signature Walk, operated by the Tasmanian Walking Company.
Launched in 2013 as part of Tourism Australia’s Signature Experiences of Australia program, Great Walks of Australia represents the pinnacle of premium, nature-based tourism. Every walk in the collection meets strict criteria for inclusion, offering safe, all-inclusive, multi-day hiking experiences that showcase Australia’s most spectacular landscapes, wilderness areas, and cultural heritage.
Genevieve Matthews, Executive Officer of Great Walks of Australia, said the group was thrilled to welcome the new walk, which brings both heart and a unique edge to the collection.
“The Uluru-Kata Tjuṯa Signature Walk offers guests an extraordinary combination of nature immersion, expert guides, comfort, culture, and storytelling, which defines what makes a Great Walk of Australia truly great,” Ms Matthews said.
“On this experience, you journey through the ancient landscapes of Australia’s Red Centre, witnessing iconic monoliths, dramatic desert light, and the living culture of the Aṉangu Traditional Owners.”
Tasmanian Walking Company now operates six Great Walks of Australia, including the acclaimed Cradle Mountain, Bay of Fires, Three Capes, and Twelve Apostles Signature Walks.
Brett Godfrey, Co-Owner of Tasmanian Walking Company, said it was a privilege to share these iconic landscapes with walkers and to continue the trusted partnership with Great Walks of Australia.
“The Uluru-Kata Tjuṯa Signature Walk is a five-day, fully guided, premium hiking experience inside Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park that was developed in partnership with Aṉangu Traditional Owners,” Mr Godfrey said.
“Guided by both indigenous partnership and a culture more than 40,000 years old, it has been a long-held dream to be granted overnight access within the World Heritage-listed National Park. You’ll journey across Country, staying in environmentally sensitive, high-quality private camps and lodge. It’s an experience that unites comfort with a genuine connection to the heart of Australia.”
A Journey Through Light, Culture, and Wilderness
On this five-day adventure, you’ll wake to desert sunrises few people ever experience and watch sunsets that linger long across the red dunes and ancient rock formations. Each day is designed to let you fully immerse in the rhythms of the desert — from dawn walks through Kata Tjuṯa’s Valley of the Winds, to exploring Mulga woodlands and approaching Uluṟu on foot, witnessing the monolith’s colours shift as the sun moves across the sky.
Along the way, Aṉangu Elders share cultural stories at Muṯitjulu Waterhole, while guides help you interpret the desert’s natural history and unique ecology. Your evenings include time to reflect on the day’s light transitions, enjoy wellness therapies, and connect with fellow walkers under the star-studded sky.
“Sunsets in Central Australia seem to go on and on,” says guide Rory Oates. “With the low horizons, the colours change slowly, lingering until there’s just a final strip of light behind the dunes.”
“Seeing the desert sun rise — solo or with others — sets the scene for the whole day,” adds Heath Garratt. “The silence, the emerging colours, the shared appreciation of the moment… it puts everything into perspective.”
This is a walk that isn’t just about movement through the landscape — it’s about connecting to it on every level: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. You leave with a profound sense of place, a deep appreciation for the desert’s rhythm, and memories of light and colour that linger long after the walk ends.
Robin Mack, Acting Managing Director, Tourism Australia, said today’s announcement strengthens the world-class nature-based tourism offering Great Walks of Australia represents.
“Great Walks of Australia is a collection of safe, all-inclusive, multi-day hiking experiences that allows visitors to be immersed in the country’s most spectacular landscapes and wilderness areas,” Mr Mack said.
“The Uluru-Kata Tjuṯa Signature Walk provides domestic and international tourists with an invitation to deeply connect with nature, culture, and place in one of Australia’s most iconic locations.”
